Anomaly guide

Physical damage

Physical damage is a panel visibly shattered, burnt or deformed. The SolarDetech platform classifies this anomaly automatically in RGB and thermal imagery together.

Physical-Destruction

Definition

This class covers severe damage to the panel's structure: shattered glass, burn marks, a melted backsheet, a bent frame or a torn-off junction box. The damage leaves a trace in both visible light and thermal imagery. It differs from glass breakage in that the damage is not confined to the glass but affects the panel as a whole.

Signs in the imagery

The RGB image shows broken and scattered glass, darkened areas or a deformed frame. In the thermal image the damaged area shows as sharp, irregular hot regions, and part of the panel may be fully out of production. The extent of the damage is determined by assessing both channels together.

Possible causes

  • Hail and storms
  • Burns after an arc or a fire
  • Falling or wind-blown objects, stones thrown during mowing
  • Mechanical impact during maintenance or installation
  • A panel lifted or loosened by wind

Effect on production and safety

Most or all of the panel's output is lost. Exposed cells and cables carry a risk of electric shock and leakage current, and moisture ingress makes the damage worse. Burn marks show that a thermal event has occurred in a connection or a cell, and the surrounding panels should be checked too.

Recommended action

Raise a work order immediately, warn the field team about exposed conductors and isolate the panel safely. Replace the damaged panel and check the panels and cables in the same string for spread damage. After hail or a storm, plan a rapid damage inspection. The measurement history can be used in warranty and insurance claims.
